The Ultimate Guide to Traveling With Your Dog

INTRODUCTION

How to Nail Air Travel with Dogs

My passport may be stamped in more languages than I can order a coffee in (working on it), but my most loyal travel companion remains the one who doesn't know how to talk. My dog cares only that I’m close by—preferably in super soft cashmere and packing snacks.

Over the years, I’ve gathered hard-earned wisdom (and a collection of fur-covered carry-ons) about how to fly with dogs in a way that’s stress-free and aligned with my long-life mindset.

Airlines: Not All Are Created Equal

When you're flying with a dog, the airline matters *immensely*—not just in terms of policy, but in the nuance of how you're treated when traveling with a furry companion.

These are my tried-and-true, dog-friendliest options, from luxe commercial to fully pet-centric, semi-private experiences:

Luxury & Semi-Private Pet Travel Options

  • K9 Jets
This is a semi-private jet service for people who refuse to check their dogs . Dogs of all sizes are welcome to fly in-cabin and without a crate right alongside you.
    Routes include:
    • New York ⇄ London
    • LA ⇄ Paris
    • Dubai ⇄ London
    • Florida ⇄ NYC ⇄ LA

Each ticket includes your seat and your dog's. Flights operate on set dates and fill quickly. And the experience includes premium pet-friendly amenities, white-glove check-in, and stress-free customs clearance assistance.

  • BARK Air
Created by the humans behind BarkBox, this is the first commercial-style airline built entirely for dogs. In other words, you are the guest, and your pet is the star. There’s no such thing as cargo here. Dogs sit in luxurious, open cabin environments with playtime, high-quality treats, soothing aromatherapy, and even vet-vetted calming aids available in-flight.

Every detail is curated with canine well-being in mind. Much like us, it’s not just dog-friendly, it’s dog-obsessed.
  • JSX (JetSuiteX)
A semi-private hop-on jet service that allows small dogs in-cabin with no middle seats, speedy boarding, and luxe lounges. Ideal for short-haul domestic routes.

JSX offers a VIP airport experience (no long TSA lines, no chaos)and your dog flies  right next to you in the open seating area (if under 20 lbs in a carrier). Larger dogs can fly in the cabin area under specific conditions.
  • Surf Air & Aero
Boutique semi-private jet services based in California and the West Coast. They allow small pets in cabin and offer a polished, members-only experience for frequent travelers. You’ll board at private terminals, skip TSA lines entirely, and enjoy a cocktail or two before wheels-up.
  • VistaJet (private charter, but worth a note)
For ultra-luxe international travel, VistaJet offers a VistaPet program that includes pet menus curated by pet nutritionists, doggie bedding, wellness kits, and more.
Pet-Friendly Commercial Airlines

JetBlue

The JetPaws program is intuitive and respectful, and I’ve had consistently warm experiences with staff when flying with my dog.

Alaska Airlines

Quietly one of the most pet-friendly airlines in the U.S. Clear policies, low fees, and helpful crew.

Air France / KLM / Lufthansa

International carriers with dignified and humane pet policies, especially for small dogs traveling in cabin. They allow cabin pets on most transatlantic flights, as long as your dog is under 17 lbs in carrier.

If You Can, Upgrade

If it’s within your means, consider splurging on a  premium cabin when flying with your dog. Why? More space for the carrier at your feet, less chaotic energy, and generally more accommodating staff. I try to fly Business Class with my dog nestled under the seat in a soft-sided, breathable carrier (I love Sherpa’s Deluxe Pet Carrier, which fits most airline specs and looks like a little Bottega if you squint).

Some luxury private jet services (like NetJets or XO) allow medium-to-large dogs to lounge freely, and if you’re traveling with a crew, splitting a semi-private option can make sense and reduce stress dramatically. It’s the dream scenario — and yes, I’ve done it, and yes, it was everything.

Wellness First and Always

I can’t overstate the importance of pre-flight prep. Flying is stressful for us and our dogs.

Here’s how I prep my dog before wheels up:

  • Hydration starts the day before, not just the morning of. Offer fresh water and consider a bone broth ice cube or two for extra minerals.
  • Avoid heavy meals before flying. A light, well-balanced meal 4–6 hours before takeoff is perfect. I feed an organic, whole food dog diet typically. No new treats or diet changes the week prior to travel to prevent any upset stomach. Consider probiotic supplements, especially in the days leading up to travel to keep digestion strong and stress-resilience high.
  • Bring a calming aid if needed. I don’t sedate my dog (it’s dangerous and outdated), but I’ll sometimes use calming chews with organic chamomile, L-theanine, or magnesium. Always vet-approved, always organic. Some of the semi-private airlines have a stash.
  • Exercise is non-negotiable. A long morning walk before heading to the airport is a must. A tired dog is a good traveler.

Pet Packing List

The below is always in my dog’s carry-on:

  • Collapsible water bowl
  • USDA organic calming chews
  • Soft carrier with removable, washable liner
  • A few disposable pee-pee pads to line the bottom of the carrier (if used) for easy cleanup.
  • Travel pack of all supplements and medications
  • Copy of vaccination records and health certificate (some airlines require it)
  • Any needed import/export or international health certificates if needed (check with the destination country for exact requirements)
  • Organic wipes for paws and travel grime
  • A familiar toy or blanket (scent is comfort)

The Tail End

Dogs are mirrors. If you’re stressed, they feel it. I try to make the entire experience—from packing to boarding—as calm as possible.

And when you land, take them for a grounding walk. Let them sniff, explore, decompress. Offer fresh filtered water and a small meal. Then maybe a glass of wine for you, and a snuggle on a hotel terrace somewhere beautiful.
